Alicia’s Internship Experience
For many years, I worked as an insurance agent here in the DFW area. While the company and people I worked for were great, it was not my calling. I knew I had to finish my degree and try something new. I was working on a BBA in Accounting when a good friend of mine took a job in Austin with a social media company. Visiting her and seeing what she did sparked a new fire in me. I realized I could use my love for social media and turn it into a career. But first, I would need experience.
Late one night, I found the answer to my problem: a posting for a social media intern at Ilfusion. A quick Google search of the company revealed it was just the place I wanted to work for. A fun, creative environment with an amazing group of people. I applied and got the internship.
On my first day I wasn’t sure what I was walking into, but I was quickly greeted into an environment that matched what I saw online. The best part was this was not a normal internship where the intern is reduced to only getting coffee and making copies. No, I was going to be learning through first hand experience. I gained knowledge on brand management, building brand awareness, and social media strategies. I was able to learn how to write blogs for clients, create engaging posts for Facebook, Twitter, and Google+, and do interactions in various social media platforms.
The only thing that may be better than the experience I gained was that the atmosphere at Ilfusion fostered learning. No question was a bad one, and everyone wanted to help interns learn as much as possible.
Needless to say, I changed my major to a BBA in Marketing and will be graduating May 2014. Thanks to Ilfusion, I have gained invaluable experience that will help me begin my career. And if I am lucky, I will be back one day.
