4 Essential Tips for Web Design That Drives Sales

With almost everything going digital today, a website is undoubtedly a necessity and an extremely essential marketing and sales tool for any business, no matter the size or how long they’ve been in existence. Merely having a website, however, is not enough. A business should have a website that not only drives traffic but also encourages visitors to convert into paying customers.

There are many intricacies that come into play in creating a successful website — from the design to the navigation, user experience, and down to the content itself. Web design, on the other hand, is found to have a powerful impact on the way visitors perceive a business and, ultimately, on their purchasing decision. A study conducted by the University of Surrey revealed that 75% of users’ judgment on a business’ credibility is based on the website design and aesthetics they see — the more professional your website appears, the more likely visitors will convert.

Here are four essential aspects in web design to consider in order to yield greater results and to drive more sales:

1. Prominent calls-to-action

Despite common belief, consumers actually need to be told exactly what they are expected to do on your website. Call-to-action (CTA) buttons are crucial elements to your web design—as it’s the precursor that leads your visitors further down into the sales funnel.

A study by Hubspot revealed that adding prominent calls-to-action in a homepage can increase conversion rates by nearly 106%. Consider the overall color palette of your website and choose popping and contrasting colors for your CTA buttons. Its placement should also be at front and center, or the right-hand area of your site where users’ eyes are more drawn to see. Choose compelling words as your CTA copy—for example, buy now, sign up for free, or register now.

2. Lots of white space

Many business owners make the mistake of assuming that their website should be laden with as much information as possible. However, doing so actually results in a cramped and disorganized website that not only looks aesthetically unappealing but also potentially turn your visitors off.

White space is almost always an underappreciated element in web design, but in reality, it’s a powerful design tool that allows visitors some breathing space and guides them through the focal points of your website. Go for a simple and minimalistic web design with an ample amount of white space where your visitors can take a little break.

3. Ease of use and navigation

While the overall web design greatly impacts a visitor’s initial impression of your website, what makes them stay is the user interface (UI) and ease of navigation. Navigating your website should be simple and intuitive. Your visitors should be able to find the information they need with ease.

Place the most important information above the fold, including a navigation menu. A sitemap at the footer of your website also helps in guiding visitors to other content of your website. For eCommerce sites, make it a point to feature a prominent search bar, easy-to-find “my cart” button, and seamless payment and shipping integration.

4. Multimedia elements

Including multimedia elements such as videos to your website can potentially help in boosting conversion rates—in fact, including videos on a landing page can increase conversion rates by at least 80% and 64% of consumers are more likely to make a purchase after watching branded videos.

When adding multimedia elements to your website, it’s important to consider the media file sizes and how they impact the page load speed of your site. Page elements in your website that are too heavy could lead to slower page load speeds, and could result in a poor website user experience. Additionally, apply media queries to all design elements, including multimedia content, to ensure that your website is as responsive as possible.

Web design is more than just the aesthetics of your website; it’s also about creating a strong brand identity that compels consumers to interact with and advocate for your business and your products. With all that’s been said, the most important thing is to have your website professionally designed. Web design is a specialized skill that requires years of experience.
