Ac-COUNT Me In For Account Management!
I have been with Ilfusion for a while now and have loved every minute of it. Recently, I transitioned from a Social Media Strategist position into an Account Management role. Honestly, I was a little nervous about taking on the responsibilities, but I was eager for the challenge and the chance to be more hands on with our clients. Account management can be quite an undertaking, and it is easy to be overwhelmed, but here are some tips that have helped me survive and excel in this position.
Be organized. Whatever it takes, get your organizational system under control and keep it consistent. Find what tools will help you stay on top of things, whether they be notepads, binders, planners, or dry erase boards (all of which I have on my desk). Utilizing these tools will be make it much easier to dig up important files or email conversations when you need them!
Ask questions. Some people tend to think asking questions implies you do not know what you are doing, but don’t let that discourage you. I don’t know how many times I consulted the team (sorry if I annoyed you, everyone), but it is much better to ask and do something right than to assume and do something wrong. You will learn with time, practice, and lots of repetition. Just be sure you learn how to do things correctly first!
Take a break. This can be a very demanding position that deals with multiple people and multiple sets of tasks. Trying to compartmentalize it all is enough to make your brain hurt. Be sure that you allow time for your brain to recharge so you can handle the heavy load of day-to-day communications and tasks.
Remember what it’s all about. It all comes back to the relationships you have with your clients. Maintaining a good rapport with your clients will make your job easier and more enjoyable. Communication will go more smoothly when you can be confident and comfortable speaking with your point of contacts. A happy client is a happy agency!
Don’t be scared. This is a great position for communicators, go-getters, problem solvers and relationship builders. Seeing your clients succeed because of projects you helped them with is reward enough at the end of the day.
I hope this information helps any of you hoping to pursue a career in account management, and I wish you the best of luck!
