Amanda’s Internship Experience

amanda internship experience January 21, 2014 | By Ilfusion Team

The senior year of college not only brings excitement but the pressures of getting a great real-life job after graduation. It seems like everyone around me suddenly started asking, “What are you doing after graduation?” And I was wondering the same thing. As a Graphic Design major, the long list of career paths made the question even more difficult. I decided the only way to find the right path for me, was with first-hand experience. My internship at Ilfusion gave me that, and so much more.

Before my journey in graphic design began, I was a competitive figure skater. I devoted much of my life to the sport, moving across the country, homeschooling and often spending 10 hours a day at the rink. An average day would consist of five 45 minute freestyles, three private lessons and multiple off ice training sessions. But no matter how much work is put in, a skater’s goal is to project an effortless image of grace. The smallest detail like the position of her fingers in a spin is what separates a good skater from a great skater. The same thing is true of graphic design and a creative agency. Perfection comes from hard work, dedication, and attention to details.

During my internship I gained first-hand experience into the day to day workings of a high energy successful agency. I witnessed everything from the first meeting with the clients to the final products. I was amazed at the talent and expertise that is required to successfully execute things that I had previously thought of as being so simple. In a business with so many overlapping components, I was impressed at how smooth projects would come together. It quickly became clear that it was the strength of Ilfusion’s team that enabled them to accomplish so much and still project an effortless image of refinement for their clients.

As a design intern I not only learned about the industry, but participated in many client projects while cultivating my skills. I was able to experience projects from many different industries and design esthetics. Most importantly, I was able to apply the skills that I learned in college while acquiring completely new techniques that are used in the industry. These are skills that I can take with me forever.

I value my time interning at Ilfusion and I’m so thankful for all of the knowledge and experience that I received. I not only had a great semester, but am closer than ever to being able to answer that dreaded question, “What are you doing after graduation?”
