Networking Isn’t Just for You
When you hear the word “networking”, you probably feel like most others do. Do you think about a room full of people with name tags on, sipping drinks and making forced, lame conversation? Do you picture insurance salesmen hitting you up for that very important “You’re gonna die soon” life insurance talk?
If this is your idea of networking, please, let me help you in the right direction. The most important thing to remember in networking is that success is measured in how successful you make others. Your connections should get more out of the exchange than you do. The more you help others make connections and aid them in their quest to become successful, the more you will see this reciprocated to you.
One way to help others make connections is to invite them out to non-profit meetings and events, as well as any networking events that are atypical. Non-profit events usually are not intended to be actual networking events, so it is easier to feel comfortable and get to know those around you. Atypical networking events would be any kind of social get-together and could include standard happy hours, church functions, or even your Uncle’s annual backyard cook-off.
So, in an effort to better market yourself, your business and your brand, keep networking efforts a common practice. It’s not all insurance salesmen. You just have to be a good judge of where and when to network, as well as focusing more on the success of others.
